How children learn here
We take play seriously.
Our curriculum is built on the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) — Australia’s national framework for early childhood learning. Its vision is simple and powerful: children learn best when they feel they belong, are free to simply be, and are supported in everything they’re becoming. Through play — sensory, physical, creative, imaginative and dramatic — children learn to think, communicate, negotiate, share, take turns, take safe risks and resolve conflict.
1. Children lead, educators extend
We give children real choices and the freedom to self-select what they play with. That sense of agency — I can decide, I am capable — is one of the most important things a young child can build. Our educators watch what captures the children, follow those interests, and know exactly when to step in to model, guide and extend the learning further.
2. Learning is made visible
We document children’s learning through photos, learning stories, artwork and everyday conversation, and we share all of it with you.
Everyone – children, educators and families – can see the learning as it unfolds and add their own voice to it. And honestly? We’re proud of what these kids do every single day, and it shows in everything we put together.
3. We never stop improving
Reflection is core professional practice for our educators – reviewing what we did, what the children showed us, and what we’ll try next.
It happens in the small daily moments and in team conversations, shaping how we plan and respond. Everyone is a learner at Walkerston Early Learning, including us.

Nursery – Babies
Across our two Nursery rooms, we follow your home routines as closely as we possibly can; your baby’s sleep times, feeds and rhythms, not ours. Babies have their own separate, quiet sleep space with cots. Sensory play is the heart of this room, but our littlest people experience almost everything the big children do: outdoor play, art, books and songs — all building social, language and thinking skills. The speed of development at this age is genuinely astounding, and we don’t want you to miss any of it.
15 months – 3 years

Toddlers
Walking! Words! As independence and confidence take off, so does everything else. Our Toddler room offers active outdoor play, growing opportunities to make choices and learn routines, first experiences of playing with (not just alongside) friends, and plenty of messy, glorious artistic expression. This is a huge developmental leap – children here are sometimes learning to toilet train, share and talk, all at once. Our educators are chosen for their love of exactly this wild, wonderful age.
2 – 3 years

Senior Toddlers
Senior Toddlers are becoming determined, capable little people who want to challenge their bodies and minds. We provide ongoing challenges that build their sense of agency — the ability to make choices and understand their own abilities — alongside rich collaborative and imaginative play, gross and fine motor development, and fast-blossoming language. This is the age where children start finding their passions, and we love helping them chase those down.
2.5 – 3.5 years
1 educator: 11 children
Jnr-Kindy
Pre-Kindy children are confident in their bodies, increasingly sure of what they enjoy (and what they don’t!), and developing a stronger sense of self almost daily. Our job is to give them a secure space where they know they’re supported — then fill it with engaging experiences and just-right challenges. Children here grow familiar with routine, begin understanding consequences, and directly shape their own learning environment.
3.5 years to school

Kindergarten
